Leg problems
Cellulite
Size and shape apart, one of the most common leg beauty
problems is cellulite. This can also affect the buttocks, and
even the upper arms, but it most often occurs on the
thighs.
Not all experts agree on the cause of cellulite or on its
cure, indeed many experts dispute its existence as a condition
different from normal overweight. However, cellulite deposits
can occur on women who are otherwise quite slim; and certainly
wherever the condition is found, it looks and behaves
differently from ordinary fat. It's a fact that cellulite
appears where the skin is subjected to the pull of gravity, and
many experts feel that this is the factor which makes it
different from ordinary fat. Some believe it to have a hormonal
cause; and others attribute it to a diet too high in animal
fats.
Cellulite is often called 'peau d'orange' (orange peel skin)
because of its characteristically dimpled appearance. It
consists of very solid and congested areas of fat beneath the
skin surface. Blood circulation is sluggish in the area, so
that the tissues are short of oxygen and nutrients, and wastes
are not removed efficiently.
There are few cases of cellulite which cannot be improved -
eventually - through weight reduction; though for best results
this should be combined with exercises specifically directed at
spot-reducing the site of the cellulite. Massage can also help,
as it will improve the circulation, and the surface contour of
the skin. There are also specially-designed massage 'gloves'
available for the treatment of cellulite . These are made up of
rubber pads with raised nodules in a plastic grip-holder and
are used with soap or cream. They can be very effective in some
cases, though regular use is essential. Unfortunately, the
combination of diet, exercise and massage works only slowly;
but if you are troubled by cellulite you will find that these
efforts are very worthwhile in the long run:
Broken veins
Broken veins often occur on the thighs and are frequently an
inherited tendency. It is possible to treat them in a beauty
salon by short-wave diathermy, which involves coagulating the
blood vessels through an electric current, but if the condition
is hereditary they are likely to reappear. Camouflage with
cosmetics is therefore a more realistic and practical way of
dealing with this problem.
Some women with very pale skin may be bothered by the
visibility of blood vessels in their thighs and again this is
best disguised with cosmetics or a fake or natural tan.
Varicose veins
This common condition is caused by inefficient circulation due
to damage in the valves of the leg veins. Insufficient exercise
and overweight can contribute to the problem, which can also
arise as a result of pregnancy. Severe cases require medical
treatment and some specialists are willing to treat varicose
veins at an early stage, before they become at all unsightly.
Support stockings or tights, whilst they cannot cure varicose
veins, give effective camouflage and relieve much of the
discomfort. These are now available in quite sheer meshes and
fashionable colours. Exercise sandals are also helpful in
relieving and even preventing varicose veins.
